Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered many other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say initial examinations indicate the liquid was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; authorities are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the incident," they added.
City officials said they were working "to solve the incident" and have requested to the public for information.
A high-ranking political figure stated the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant targeting individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
