The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
