Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
