The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical physical horror, but beneath Together lies a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when the couple relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the type of challenges that come with most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
